| Country Retreat
Woodside, California
This historic stone winery-turned-residence inspires
the gardens’ design vocabulary evoking the feel of a romantic south
of France retreat. This garden is a series of ‘rooms’. Each
‘room’ of the garden has a collection of plants suitable to
the micro-climate based on the adjacent trees.
The backbone of the landscape palette is the existing olives, palms, oaks
and redwoods, with locally harvested stone as the primary material used
in constructing the home, garden walls, paths, fountains and spa. Following
a row of ancient olive trees and a flanking tall grass meadow with specimen
oaks, the drive passes through a wooden gate secured to stone piers terminating
at a gravel courtyard. Additional elements of this magical landscape include
vegetable beds, a painter’s studio, spa, a secret garden and the
rose walk.
