| Children's Play Garden
San Francisco, California
A client's transformation of a neighboring home to an
educational playhouse for their children and their friends
led to the creation of an adjacent adventure garden filled
with attractions and venues. A linked series of play
experiences provide visual and sensory interest and
richness, scaled to a child's point of view. The garden on
the one-acre site is designed to appeal to children and
evolve as they grow from toddlers to teenagers.
Fanciful elements include a hedge maze, giant animal
topiary figures, fountains activated by children's motion
and a pirate dingy surrounded by planting that gives the
illusion of water. More traditional features are a large
play lawn and terrace, a sandbox with an old-fashioned well
pump, a putting green for miniature golf and a garden
with sunflowers, herbs, potted citrus and fragrant flowers.
Landscaping is designed to be low-maintenance, resilient
and child-friendly.
